vonitsa: The hidden gem of Amvrakikos gulf
Vonitsa: A Peaceful Seaside Town
Vonitsa is a quiet town by the sea, known as the jewel of the Ambracian Gulf. It sits under a hill with a Venetian castle on top. The town has narrow stone streets, small houses, kids playing outside, and fishermen catching shrimp and fish in the port.

Only 22 km from Lefkada, Vonitsa is perfect for a day trip. Nature here is beautiful—big trees, colorful wildflowers in spring, and calm waters all around. The town feels like an island village, full of charm and hidden spots.
Start your visit in the old town, see the churches of Agios Spyridon and Agios Nikolaos, and walk along the peaceful seafront. Head to the marina to see the boats, then walk up to the castle through eucalyptus trees for a great view. Afterward, relax by the sea with a drink or fresh seafood—especially the famous prawns and sardines.
Koukoumitsa Island
Close by is Koukoumitsa, a small green island linked to the mainland by a walking bridge. It's great for a peaceful stroll. There's a small church among the pine trees and a nice spot for a swim nearby.
Vonitsa Castle
The castle sits 65 meters above the town. Built by the Venetians in the 11th century, it was once used to watch for pirates. Over time, it passed through many hands—Byzantines, Venetians, and Turks—before becoming Greek in 1832. The castle still has parts of its old gates, buildings, and a church. It was named a historic monument in 1922.
Beaches
Vonitsa has a few small beaches—like the one by the port, Sotiras, and Panagia. They're calm, clear, and perfect for a short swim.
